National Water Safety Month

Every year during the month of May we observe National Water Safety Month! This is a campaign coordinated by The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals with support from the National Recreation & Parks Association, the American Red Cross and the World Waterpark Association. These organizations represent businesses and other individuals and agencies involved in bringing safe, enjoyable aquatic activities to the American public, from home pools and spas, to waterparks and resort, to public swimming and water recreation facilities.

While everyone can benefit from increased knowledge of water safety, we know children need extra education. We believe it is never too early to start introducing basic water safety measures. We offer the following tips to get a head start on water safety education:

1. Never leave a child unattended in or near water.
Never leave children unattended even for a second- around any water! Did you know that it takes only less than two inches of water for someone to drown? This means not only can children fall into a pool and drown, but they can fall into a bucket or a puddle! It is always better to be overcautious than under-cautious.
2. Teach children how to swim.
Able children can learn how to swim starting at the age of ONE! Not only that, it is highly recommended that all children have had swimming lessons by the age of 4. The sooner children are capable of handling themselves in the water, the safer they will be.
3. Teach children to stay away from drains.
Hair, limbs, jewelry, and bathing suits can get stuck in a drain or a suction opening. This can cause a child to be trapped in the water and then consequently drown.
4. Ensure all pools and spas - both in your backyard and any public pool you may visit - have compliant drain covers.
 Again, better safe than sorry!
5. Install proper barriers, covers and alarms on and around your pool and spa.
Even in these situations, and even in situations where lifeguards are present - still do not leave your children unattended!
6. Know how to perform CPR on children and adults.
Often, bystanders are the first to aid a drowning victim, so learning CPR can help save a life. And once you’re CPR certified, make sure to keep your certification current. CPR classes are available through many hospitals, community centers, or by contacting the American Red Cross.

What should I do if a major storm is approaching?
Blue Ribbon Pools Storm Service Guidelines

Our priority is the safety of our client, their guests, and our employees - we will not compromise safety in any circumstance.

Service may be suspended due to the proximity of high winds, lightning or other threatening conditions.

The client is responsible for anyone using their pool, spa, or pool deck during a storm. We use the beach patrol and lifeguards as indicators of hazardous conditions - when they clear the beach, you must clear the pool deck.

If you choose to put pool furniture or other items in the pool, you are responsible for removing them.

If you lower the water level before or after a storm, be very careful NOT TO DRAIN THE POOL. The high water conditional surrounding a storm can cause your pool to POP – come out of the ground – and the repair cost is very high.

We will make every effort to maintain DOH - mandated water conditions during a storm. We make our regular visits if possible to adjust water chemistry and maintain water safety and clarity.
When conditions permit, we will resume service on our regular schedule. We cannot guarantee that your pool will be clear of storm debris on your regular service day. We will make every effort to visit each property within three days of a storm to begin cleanup (if there is no loss of electrical service).

In the event of a storm that causes the loss of electrical service at your property we will attempt to use chemicals to maintain sanitary water in your pool or spa. Of course, we cannot predict when your pool / spa will be ready for use.

We will help you plan for the restoration of service with the support of our entire team, local safety officials, and the Health Department. Please contact us at 386-366-9000 or www.blueribbonpools.com.

Are you curious how often you should be testing the chemicals in your pool?

Residential customers should test the water and make adjustments NO LESS than once a week (the more often, the better). The sanitizer in a swimming pool makes it safe for the swimmers, the pH and other chemical balances keep the pool system in good shape.

Make the job easy on yourself and call Blue Ribbon Pools to help keep your pool in perfect balance.

Has your pool company been sold?
Is the new owner licensed and insured?

Blue Ribbon Pools has served the area for over 20 years and is a Florida Certified Pool Contractor. Being fully licensed and insured allows us to hire the best employees and KEEP them. As we continue to grow we see others in the community who don’t take this industry as serious as we do.
