Hello again- Ten years have already passed since Florida had four unwelcome guests: Charlie, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne, the hurricanes of 2004. So now is a good time to answer some Tropical Weather FAQ's
Q - If it's going to rain a lot, should we drain our pool down before the storm?
A - it's OK to drain some water from your pool ahead of a storm, but be careful! You could damage your equipment or your pool area by draining too much water. In 2004 a large pool was seriously damaged when the water drained out ahead of a hurricane washed away support for the pool deck, leading to a $25,000 repair.
Q - Should I turn my pump off?
A- Yes. If power is lost there could be flooding in your equipment area. Pump motors that are turned off when flooded will frequently work normally after they dry out; if the motor is running when the water rises, they rarely last longer than a few days after they're restarted.
Q - Is it alright to put our pool furniture in the pool during the storm?
A - If it's the only place to safely store them during a storm, GENTLY put them in the pool. The oils, rust and other bad stuff that happens when furniture is put in the pool can usually be quickly fixed by your pool professional.
Hope you're enjoying this hot weather! Maurice
